Tonight is the night!
Chris and I had such a great time (such fun) filming a House Hunter's International episode detailing our move from Serbia to Belgium and our apartment hunting experience. We filmed for four full days in between Serbia and Belgium, and we were able to involve so many of the amazing friends that we have made along the way. We can't wait to see our friend's faces on TV! This episode was filmed quite a while ago, so it will be interesting to see the finished product.
Anyway, on the west coast, HGTV will show our episode at 7:30pm and 10:30pm tonight. In Kentucky, our mugs will be on TV at 10:30pm and again at 1:30am. Get all of the exact information here. Feel free to tune in!! You may be seeing the episode before we do since we have to record it and watch it on Thursday morning.

I wish I could watch it! In fact, I've been trying to catch Mike & Jess' episode for the last 1.5 years but it's never on when I'm in Canada!

ReplyDeleteI'm aware that these shows depict a house hunting experience that isn't exactly genuine (to be kind)--but I thought the producers used people who, while having already selected their new residence, had not actually moved in such that the producers could get footage of the featured buyers/renters looking at their residence without their furnishings in it. However, it's clear from your blog here that at the time of filming, you had been in your Belgian apartment for well in excess of 6 months--so my question is how were they able to get footage of you looking at your apartment without your furnishings in it? My suspicion is that it was actually another unit in the building but I'll be interested to hear the definitive answer.
ReplyDeleteObviously much of the dialog in a House Hunters episode is unintentionally hilarious when you know it's largely contrived but nevertheless the show, particularly House Hunters International, is still fun to watch because it's interesting to see the residences featured. But what was particularly interesting in your episode was to see what they termed your "last day in Serbia"--which might have been technically true if it was the last day of your return there but which was nevertheless many months after your last day of residence there. Unfortunately, I missed how long they indicated it was in the "X months/weeks later" piece at the end but I imagine it was just some contrived amount of time they thought made sense to list.
Finally, it's funny that in the time since your episode was filmed you have moved out of Belgium and on to Germany! It's definitely cool what you are dong--God bless you!
You are right, Josh, there is a lot of "TV magic" in the filming of this show. We sort of had to recreate a lot of the elements of our lives in the moving from Serbia portion. For instance, we did have a large going away dinner in Serbia, and for camera, we reshot all of our friends at a dinner highlighting the friends that we had made and the places we had fallen in love with. We had already chosen our apartment in Belgium when HHI contacted us to shoot a show. We thought it was strange, but once I researched the show, I found that they don't hide the requirements to be on the show. In the end, a lot of what we said and did for filming was slightly "staged" if you will, but we did throw a lot of our own emotions and experiences into our show. We had fun, and we would do it again if they asked us to now that we are living in Germany.

ReplyDeletemy mom and i watch HHI almost every night (we both love traveling. she grew up in prague and i lived in spain for the last year and a half). we loved your episode and how you guys have followed your traveling dreams!

I didn’t get to watch it, but I’m sure it has become a remarkable period in your lives. Being on TV, documenting the whole process can only affect it on the extremes. It can make matters tremendously light or stressful for you. But who cares, you’re famous! :D
